Paul manages the Institute on a day to basis and is responsible for overseeing all major research assignments. Paul has an MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business and has more than 15 years marketing experience with companies like Barclays, Telewest, LondonWaste and The Qualitative Consultancy.

Neo is the Group Strategy Director at Ogilvy and Mather South Africa and has worked with the Institute for a number of years. In her current role she is responsible for driving effectiveness in the Ogilvy SA group, planning and embedding Ogilvy Network IP through the group.
Dr Joel Chigada
Joel is head of the marketing section at UCT. Prior to joining UCT he lectured at Unisa and was also an external examiner. His depth of experience in industry is also impressive, as he was Marketing Manager for Digital Technologies & Customer Acquisition at Nedbank (2004-2011), a Marketing project consultant at Nokia, product manager at Philips and sales executive at Nissan.
Dr James Lappeman
James Lappeman the Head of Projects at the UCT Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing. He has a PhD in marketing (specializing in consumer behaviour) and has lectured and supervised both undergraduate and postgraduate students in a range of marketing disciplines. James also holds a Bachelor of Business Science (marketing) and Masters in Social Science (Religion). He has lectured, convened and moderated courses at UCT’s School of Management Studies, UCT’s Graduate School of Business, Henley Business School, Vega, Red & Yellow, GetSmarter and Educate24. James has published research in both local and international journals and co-edited Marketing in South Africa, which was published by Van Schaik Publishers in 2017.
Martin is an experienced marketing all-rounder, having held senior positions in various local and multi-national businesses in the retail, advertising and FMCG sectors. His career spans more than 25 years and includes positions such as managing director of Berry Bush BBDO, director of marketing and financial services at Ackermans Group and chairman of Jay-Jays. He currently lectures in marketing at UCT, facilitates at the University of Stellenbosch Business School and consults to various organisations.
Martin has a degree in Economics and Politics from the University of Natal and an MBA from the UCT Graduate School of Business.
Emeritus Professor John Simpson was director of the UCT Unilever Institute of Strategic Marketing since its formation in 1999 until 2016. Professor Simpson has spent many years at UCT teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the disciplines of marketing, consumer behaviour and strategy.
He has also been director of the UCT Graduate School of Business , Dean of the UCT Faculty of Commerce and Head of the UCT School of Management Studies. Professor Simpson has consulted for many South African firms and his Institute work brings him into contact with senior executives in a vast cross section of South African business.
